Sad reasons we need shelters

Those who work in shelters or in animal welfare bear the heartache and feelings of helplessness and anger at the number of abused, neglected and abandoned animals. People like Tim Trow, president of the Toronto Humane Society, try to make a difference, to bring relief or medical help, and not go under beneath the sheer weight of human cruelty or irresponsibility.

He Globes energy would be better directed to helping expose people who exploit companion animals for gain through puppy mills, unscrupulous breeders and pet stores (OSPCA Suspends Status, Launches Probe Of Humane Society - June 3). The proper treatment of animals, the responsibilities of pet ownership and the laws, federal and provincial that exist to protect them, would be a far better assignment.

2009-06-02 More than the law upholds animal welfare

Education is vital around animal welfare. Animals cannot possess rights since a precondition to a right is awareness of possessing that right. Therefore, it is important that we learn that as humans we have a responsibility to be kind to animals.

It needs to be stressed that poverty can only be seen as an excuse for neglecting animals. There are many people, as demonstrated in todays Nanaimo Daily News, able look after their animals regardless of their economic circumstance.

An international animal transport group has told its members to get up to scratch on animal welfare practices.

We certainly dont want members in our association that are not humane handling and working to improve the welfare of animals," she says.
