Bussian will receive funding to continue the digital dissection program after two animal-rights groups, Animalearn, a Pennsylvania group, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, contacted her this week. Melissa Carlo/Winona Daily News I agree with the approach of giving the students a choice between a real dissection and virtual. I also agree that for students entering a medical field, the experience of a real dissection is invaluable. I will admit that PETA angers me a great deal with their approach to animal rights. Animalearn seems to have a much firmer grip on reality, so I applaud their willingness to help. " www.winonadailynews.com

In addition, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is planning a five-day protest of the circus shows at the Cow Palace in Daly City, calling Oklahoma-based Carson and Barnes Circus a "chronic violator" of the federal Animal Welfare Act. The animal rights organization claims handlers use bull hooks, electric prods and other devices to control the elephants. In 1997, the Marin Humane Society and others attempted to block a planned Carson and Barnes fundraising show for the Novato Rotary Club. Several Rotary members dressed as clowns in support of the circus during one Novato City Council meeting as animal rights activists spoke out over inhumane treatment. www.marinij.com

This type of thing is far too common these days and we will continue to see stories like this if we dont all start to stand up for our rights. When animal control, HSUS, and others decide you are abusing animals, they dont give you the option of showing proof of veterinary care and will do their utmost to convince you to sign over all of your animals to them in lieu of having charges filed agaisnt you. Living with animals, be it pet or livestock, include the reality of old age, illness, and death. Its a part of life that affects us all. You never get used to it, but when you have a larger than normal number of animals (compared to 1 or 2 pets), you do learn to live with the fact that you will lose some to stillbirths, some to weather issues, and some to disease or old age. This country has gone overboard on animal issues thanks www.mlive.com

Second Vivienne. Animal welfare wouldnt be a problem when there is no cruelty involved. As long as there is cruelty animal welfare is a problem for the producers of animal suffering. As there are calls all over society from Animal Welfare people all over the world, why arent we respected Because the money involved matters more than animal welfare in my book. We are just a nuisance for moneyspinners. With all due respect to Vivienne, animals are resources, BUT, it is our responsibility to manage and care for them correctly. Producers are accountable; if they are not, they become bankrupt. To say they should be treated humanely is an oxymoron - they are not human. Nor do they have rights. They cannot vote nor can they pickup a gun and fight. People cannot be assigning human characteristics to animals. theland.farmonline.com.au
IF THE North American experience is any gauge, Australia will inevitably face a larger and considerably more complex animal welfare and animal rights challenge against which it must become better prepared and resourced to fight.
