2009-06-08 Can Virtual Humans And Micro-lungs Bring The End Of Animal ResearchBeyond Animal Research is supported by the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs), in association with New Scientist. It is part of the Centres programme of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the concept of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). Cell biologist Dr BruB will showcase her efforts to develop micro-lungs that have the potential to replace the use of large numbers of animals in research. She believes that "developing intelligent cell growth scaffolds is the new era of cell culture. By recreating tissue environments, we will improve understanding of many aspects of cell behaviour including wound healing and responses to therapeutic drugs without the use of animal models. 2009-06-06 Newswise Medical News Ginkgo Reduces Neuropathic Pain in Animal StudiesThe International Anesthesia Research Society is a nonpolitical, not-for-profit medical society founded in 1922 to encourage, stimulate, and fund ongoing anesthesia-related research and projects that will enhance and advance the anesthesiology specialty. The IARS has a worldwide membership of 15,000 physicians, physician residents, and others with doctoral degrees, as well as health professionals in anesthesia-related practice. In additional to publishing the monthly scientific journal An extract of ginkgo biloba shows scientific evidence of effectiveness against one common and hard-to-treat type of pain, according to animal data reported in the June issue of Anesthesia and Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS). www.newswise.com
2009-06-05 Work hard at things you love to do"Improving conditions for laboratory animals was not only important for the welfare of the animals but was equally important to ensure the validity of the research for which the animals were being used. In the early days of research conducted using animals, the husbandry of the animals was totally makeshift. The enclosures that held the animals varied from used shipping crates and glass jars to old horse stalls. The bedding used was far from sterile and often was contaminated with insects. There were minimal attempts at lighting and temperature control. In short, the conditions under which the research animals were kept often caused stress, illness, and death of the animals, leading to questionably valid research results, not to mention raising serious ethical issues. www.avma.org

2009-06-04 The Veteran ACES dean named interim provost at UIEaster is also a professor of nutritional sciences and of animal sciences. His research has focused on amino-acid needs of lactating sows, the effect of post-weaning nutrition on growth and the use of agents in lean growth in pigs. Easter, a Texas native, arrived in Illinois in 1976 as a professor of swine nutrition and management. From 1996 to 2001, he was the head of the department of animal sciences. He has served as dean of ACES since 2002, promoted to that job by Herman. www.news-gazette.com
2009-06-03 Watchdog seeks probe of leading U. S. labsThe animal research industry is just as unregulated as Wall Street was before the current economic crisis," said Michael A. 2009-06-02 Wiping Out The Worlds Mass Migrations: First Analysis Of The Effect Of Habit Changes On Migrating GrazersTo assess the impact of human activity on migrations throughout the world, Harris and his co-authors gathered information on all 24 species of large (over 20 kilograms) ungulates known for their mass migrations. Animals included in the study, for example, range over Arctic tundra (Caribou), Eurasian steppes and plateaus (Chiru and Saiga), North American plains (bison and elk), and African savannahs (zebra and wildebeests). The fewest number of mass-migrating species live in the Americas, and this is the location where the most data exists. Evaluating the human impact on migratory species in Africa and Eurasia is hampered by a lack of scientific data: in Africa - where most of the large-scale migrations remain - three species have no scientific publications on their status, and in Eurasia half of the six remaining migratory species www.sciencedaily.com

2009-06-01 Animal hoarding issue needs attention Farm and Dairy - The Auction Guide and Rural MarketplaceThe research and case follow-ups collected at Tufts Universitys Animal Hoarding Research Consortium back up LaFarges experience. According to their data, the recidivism rate is nearly 100 percent. Because our legal system is not very effective in prosecuting hoarders, and many refuse mental health counseling, the best way to prevent animal suffering is for communities to play an active role in prevention. Everyone has heard of the crazy cat lady, the older woman who lives alone and has more than the average number of feline friends roaming around. But just because a person has a lot of animals, does not necessarily make them a hoarder. www.farmanddairy.com

2009-05-29 Beating heart machine expedites research and development of new surgical tools, techniquesCurrently, most medical device prototypes designed for use in heart surgery are tested on live pigs, which have heart valves that are anatomically similar to human heart valves. However, these tests are both expensive and time-consuming, and involve a lengthy permission process to ensure that the use of live animals is necessary. So, researchers at NC State have developed a "dynamic heart system" a machine that pumps fluid through a pig heart so that it functions in a very realistic way. "Researchers can obtain pig hearts from a pork processing facility and use the system to test their prototypes or practice new surgical procedures," says Andrew Richards, a Ph. D. student in mechanical engineering at NC State who designed the heart machine. www.eurekalert.org
A new machine developed at North Carolina State University makes an animal heart pump much like a live heart after it has been removed from the animals body, allowing researchers to expedite the development of new tools and techniques for heart surgery. The machine saves researchers time and money by allowing them to test and refine their technologies in a realistic surgical environment, without
