2009-05-29 Your Worst Animal Nightmares: So, whats yours PopWatch BlogMy worst animal nightmare Id be quietly feeding ducks bits of bread at a nearby pond, when a gaggle of geese flock on to the pond, and advance to my shore-side. Theyd scare away the family of ducks I was feeding--leaving them hungry as Id only just started feeding them--and then would start to harass me for my bread. I have a pathological fear of geese (stemming from a horrific incident when I was very young involving me innocently feeding bread to geese at a pond), and so because of this Id feed them the rest of my bread. As I feed them, more and more would come, inducing the precursor of an anxiety attack you get 30 seconds into a long elevator trip with a lone stranger in a suit listening to Huey Lewis on his Zune--after having just watched American Psycho. 2009-05-28 Daily Vanguard - A patio to die forIt was something out of an Animal Planet television special on Portland, the way myself and other passing 20-somethings stopped, noticed the patio and hesitated, trying to figure out if this was some kind of yuppie trap. While most left, my food-adventurer friend and I decided to give it a try. www.dailyvanguard.com

Why dont we make loaded firearms illegal within say, 100 yards of any RV-accessible road but allow loaded firearms in campsites and on all trails This achieves two goals: it gives backcountry hikers and campers a measure of personal protection from criminal and animal attack. It also gives park wildlife the freedom to (without the threat of being shot) continue stomping, goring, maiming and otherwise communing with the hordes of camera-wielding Animal Planet watchers who choke our national park roads every summer. www.fieldandstream.com
Theres already been aand boatload of bloviation expressed on the recent reversal of the ban on loaded firearms in our national parks, some of it sensible but most of it (predictably) bordering onand hysterics. This column is a perfect example. and From the story:and "In fact, and the new rule is likely to make national park visitors less safe aroundand
