2009-01-05 Pets Being Abandoned As Budgets Tighten - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston

Frates said that several dogs of the same breed have turned up in the forest, and he believes that breeders may be dumping the animals outside rather than paying to surrender them to a shelter.

NewsCenter 5s Todd Kazakiewich reported that David Frates, who works in Lakeville and the surrounding communities, discovered 26 dogs in the last four weeks that had been abandoned in the Fall River-Freetown State Forest. According to Frates, there were 37 animals abandoned in the area over the last year.

2009-01-03 Straight Talk on Curly Calf Lancaster Farming

That issue plagued the breed for years because there was no way to differentiate animals carrying the dwarfism gene from those that were not. By avoiding breeding animals that seemed to have a tendency towards dwarfism, the Angus world reduced the problem, but in the process, entire breeding lines were abandoned. Eventually, a genetic test was developed for bulls, and a test for females is being developed.

The search for a curly calf gene took place over months, not years, and there is now a way for breeders to determine whether or not their animals are afflicted. The test uses blood or tissue samples to look for the recessive gene that causes curly calf, or AM. If the sire has the recessive gene but the dam does not, then none of their progeny will have AM, although, statistically, half their offspring will carry the gene.

WinKim Kennels respects the sanctity of life and do not subscribe to any unsound, unproven, or potentially harmful breeding and training procedures. We never arbitrarily terminate a life based on convenience or economic reasons. Artificial and induced dwarfing methods are never practiced. Questionable, harmful drugs, or chemicals are never administered to our animals.

We hold our pups longer in order to ensure their complete socialization with people, other animals, sights, sounds, smells, and situations. Our pups are also trained in basic puppy etiquette, as well as being indoor potty trained. The most important reason is between pups 8th to 12th week they experience a phenomenon known as "fear factor. " This is when pups first discover the meaning of harm, danger, fright, and fear. The pups must have someone to run to for safety, comfort, and security. We do not enrust this critical period to anyone, but ourselves, because if the pups endure this terror alone they easily become insecure, introverted, fearful, and neurotic dogs.

2008-12-27 Denver Dynamic Dogs Examiner: Couldnt say no at Christmas

I hope you didnt get your cute canine from a pet shop or puppy mill breeder. Buying from them only encourages continued irresponsible breeding. Peope find it a convenient way to make money on the side while working at a job or other business. It seems like an attractive venture for dog lovers, but in truth, it is not kind to animals. We read stories all the time about places that have more dogs than they can handle safely and healthfully. Too many dogs are overbred, unsocialized, starved, neglected, and left to die unwanted.

2008-12-23 The Genetic Basis For Increased Productivity - Cattle Network

There are two ways that crossbreeding can result in in and shy;creased production levels. Crossbreeding provides the breeder the opportunity of combining the desirable characteristics of two or more breeds, thus achieving a higher overall perfor and shy;mance level of desired traits among the crossbred animals than would generally be found within a given breed. This is frequently called breed complementarity, which refers to the strong points of one breed complementing or covering up the weak points of the other breed. The second way crossbreed and shy;ing increases productivity is through the increased levels of performance for particular traits due to heterosis. Increased productivity can result through heterosis exhibited by both the crossbred calf and the crossbred cow.

A puppy was killed and 10 dogs are being treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze destroyed a kennel block at Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre.

The dogs who were housed there, that were smaller breeds, are being cared for in foster homes and are all taking medication and eye drops after breathing smoke.

It also damaged the boiler so the shelter, that cares for a wide variety of animals from guinea pigs to horses, was without heating all weekend.

2008-12-19 Coeur dAlene animal abuse on the rise as temps drop - KHQ-TV

Veterinarian Dr. Leonard of Prairie Animal Hospital stated that "animals are at risk of hypothermia if left outside in this severe weather. How long the animal can be left outside depends upon the breed of dog, the coat of the dog and their body condition. Dogs with very short hair such as Pit Bulls, Boxers, Pugs, etc. should not be left out in frigid conditions longer than 20 minutes".

An example of adequate shelter is described as a structure made for the dog such as a dog house, or a plastic igloo with a bale of hay in it. Dogs, cats and all other farm animals should have access to water and food.
